1x2 Brown Pressure-Treated S1S2E Board, 8 ft.

A nominal 1 in. x 2 in. board, surfaced one side and two edges (S1S2E), pressure-treated with a brown-tone preservative for above-ground exterior use. One face and both edges are planed smooth; the other face is left rough-sawn. This is the 8 ft. length.

Above-ground use only. This board is treated to Use Category UC3.2 (exterior construction, above ground) under CAN/CSA O80.1. It is not rated for ground contact or persistent water exposure – for a board that sits on or in soil, in a planter, or against standing water, ask us for a ground-contact (UC4) rated product instead.

Features and Common Uses
  • Nominal 1 in. x 2 in. dimensional softwood lumber, surfaced one side and two edges (S1S2E): one face and both edges planed smooth, the other face rough-sawn

  • 8 ft. length
  • Actual dressed size 3/4 in. x 1-1/2 in., per NLGA Standard Grading Rules for Canadian Lumber

Commonly used for:

Use category and preservative retention are governed by CAN/CSA O80.1-21, Section 5; dimensional and grading requirements follow the NLGA Standard Grading Rules for Canadian Lumber. How to Install
  1. Install only where the board stays clear of soil contact and standing water. This UC3.2 board is not rated for ground contact; use a UC4 ground-contact board for posts, sleepers or anything touching soil.
  2. Use fasteners galvanized per ASTM A153, or Type 304/316 stainless steel for maximum service life. Use connectors galvanized per ASTM A653 (G185) or hot-dip galvanized after fabrication per ASTM A123.
  3. Never pair stainless steel fasteners with galvanized connectors, or vice versa. Mixing metals in a damp, copper-treated board drives galvanic corrosion.
  4. Pre-drill pilot holes when fastening within about 2 in. of a board end to reduce splitting.
  5. Cutting or drilling exposes untreated wood at the core of the board. Apply a field-treatment or end-cut preservative product to every field cut and drilled hole to maintain the board's decay resistance.

Fastener and connector metal compatibility guidance is from Wood Preservation Canada's residential fastener guidance; field-treating cut ends is from Wood Preservation Canada's field-treating guidance, which notes that cutting or drilling "exposes parts of the wood that were not treated with preservatives, increasing the opportunities for decay fungi or insects to deteriorate the wood." Frequently Asked Questions
Is this board rated for ground contact?

No. This is a UC3.2, above-ground board under CAN/CSA O80.1. Ask us for a UC4 ground-contact rated board for posts, sleepers or anything touching soil.

What fasteners do I need?

Fasteners galvanized per ASTM A153, or stainless steel (Type 304/316) for maximum service life. Connectors galvanized per ASTM A653 (G185) or ASTM A123. Don't mix stainless fasteners with galvanized connectors.

What will I actually get if I order 1x2?

The actual dressed size is 3/4 in. x 1-1/2 in., per the NLGA Standard Grading Rules for Canadian Lumber. "1x2" describes the nominal (rough-sawn) size, not the finished dimension.

Which face is rough?

S1S2E means surfaced on one side and both edges. One broad face is left rough-sawn, so turn the smooth face toward the side that will be seen or painted.

Do I need to do anything to a cut end?

Yes. Cutting or drilling exposes wood at the core that wasn't reached by the preservative. Apply a field-treatment or end-cut product to every cut and drilled hole.
