2" x 10" Select Structural Fir KDHT S4S Dimensional Lumber
This is a 2x10 in Select Structural fir, kiln dried and heat treated (KDHT) and surfaced smooth on all four sides (S4S). It measures 1-1/2 in. x 9-1/4 in. actual and comes in a 24 ft length.
Select Structural is the top grade of structural framing lumber. It has the fewest and smallest defects of the structural light framing grades and the highest design values, which makes it a fit for heavily loaded joists, headers and long spans. Span, load and local code decide the size you need, so confirm it with your building inspector or engineer.
Features and Common Uses
- Select Structural grade, the highest structural light framing grade, with the fewest and smallest defects
- Fir is a strong, stiff framing softwood that holds nails and screws well.
- Kiln dried to 19% moisture content or less, so it arrives drier and more stable than green lumber
- Heat treated (KD-HT) to a core temperature of at least 56 C for a minimum of 30 minutes
- Surfaced smooth on all four sides (S4S) for a consistent 1-1/2 in. x 9-1/4 in. actual size
- Sold in packs of 105 pieces
- Not pressure treated, so it is for dry, above-ground use
Commonly used for:
- Long-span floor joists and rafters
- Headers and beams over wide openings
- Heavily loaded framing and floor systems
- Visible framing where straight, clean boards matter
- Framing for single and multi-family homes, additions, barns, sheds, and commercial and industrial construction
- Non-structural bracing for concrete forming and packaging for shipping

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Select Structural mean?
Select Structural is the highest grade in structural light framing, above No. 1. The boards have the fewest and smallest knots and defects and the highest design stresses, so they carry more load than the lower grades.
What does KDHT mean?
KDHT means kiln dried and heat treated. The board is dried to 19% moisture content or less and heated to a core temperature of at least 56 C for a minimum of 30 minutes. It is a heat process, not a chemical preservative treatment.
What is the actual size of a 2x10?
A 2x10 measures 1-1/2 in. x 9-1/4 in. once surfaced. The 2 in. x 10 in. name is the nominal size from before the board was dried and planed.
Can I use it outside?
Only where it stays dry and above ground, or for short-term use. It is not pressure treated, so it will rot in ground contact or constant wet. Choose pressure treated lumber for buried posts and outdoor structures.
