2" x 4" Standard & Better Fir Green S4S Dimensional Lumber

This is a 2x4 in Standard & Better fir, sold green and surfaced smooth on all four sides (S4S). It measures about 1-9/16 in. x 3-9/16 in., shrinking toward 1-1/2 in. x 3-1/2 in. as it dries and comes in a 12 ft length.

Standard & Better is a light-framing grade, rated above Utility. It is graded for 2 in. to 4 in. wide lumber used in light framing, and it suits studs, plates and blocking where a structural #2 is not specified. Confirm what your plans and building inspector require for load-bearing work. This stock is sold green, so it shrinks as it dries and can twist or check.

Features and Common Uses
  • Standard & Better grade, a light-framing grade rated above Utility
  • Fir is a strong, stiff framing softwood that holds nails and screws well.
  • Green, with a moisture content above 19%, so it is soft to cut and nail
  • Surfaced smooth on all four sides (S4S) for square edges and consistent faces
  • Not pressure treated, so it is for dry, above-ground use

Commonly used for:

  • Wall studs, plates and blocking in light framing
  • Bracing, furring and backing
  • Shed, garage and shop framing
  • General carpentry

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Standard and Better mean?

It is a light-framing grade for narrow lumber. Standard and Better boards are rated above Utility, and the grade includes higher grades such as Construction. Check your plans for the grade they specify.

What does green lumber mean?

Green means the board has not been kiln dried and holds moisture above 19%. It is easy to cut and nail, but it shrinks as it dries and can twist, cup or check.

What is the actual size of a green 2x4?

Green stock is surfaced a little larger than dry stock, at about 1-9/16 in. x 3-9/16 in., shrinking toward 1-1/2 in. x 3-1/2 in. as it dries. Contact us if a specific dimension matters for your project.

Can I use it outside?

Only where it stays dry and above ground, or for short-term use. It is not pressure treated, so it will rot in ground contact or constant wet. Choose pressure treated lumber for buried posts and outdoor structures.
