4" x 5" #2 & Better Hem-Fir Green Rough Dimensional Lumber

This is a 4x5 in #2 & Better hem-fir, sold green and rough sawn. It is not planed to a fixed finished size and comes in a 8 ft length.

#2 & Better is the general framing grade. It is sound for structural and non-structural work, and it is the grade most framing plans call for. Span, load and local code decide the size you need, so confirm it with your building inspector or engineer. It is sold green and rough, so it shrinks as it dries, can check or twist, and the finished size varies, so check the size against your layout before you order.

Features and Common Uses
  • No. 2 & Better grade, a framing grade used for structural and non-structural work
  • Hem-fir is a species group of western hemlock and true firs, light in weight and easy to cut and nail.
  • Green, with a moisture content above 19%, so it is soft to cut and drill
  • Rough sawn, keeping the texture left by the sawmill for an exposed, rustic look
  • Not pressure treated, so it is for dry, above-ground use

Commonly used for:

  • Wall studs, plates, joists and rafters
  • Posts, headers and beams where the plan calls for #2
  • General framing and carpentry
  • Decks, sheds and outbuildings

Frequently Asked Questions
What does No. 2 and Better mean?

It is a visual framing grade. No. 2 and Better boards are sound for general structural use and can include higher grades above No. 2, so you get a consistent, reliable board.

What is hem-fir?

Hem-fir is a commercial species group made up of western hemlock and true firs. The wood is lighter and softer than Douglas fir, and it is graded and sold together as a single group.

What does green rough mean?

Green means the timber has not been kiln dried and holds moisture above 19%. Rough means it is sawn but not planed, so the surface keeps its sawmill texture. Expect shrinkage as it dries.

What is the actual size of a rough 4x5?

It varies. Rough-sawn lumber is not planed to a set finished size, so the actual thickness and width differ from piece to piece. Contact us if a specific dimension matters for your project.

Can I use it outside?

Only where it stays dry and above ground, or for short-term use. It is not pressure treated, so it will rot in ground contact or constant wet. Choose pressure treated lumber for buried posts and outdoor structures.
