6" x 6" Utility Douglas Fir Green S4S Dimensional Lumber
This is a 6x6 in Utility Douglas fir, sold green and surfaced smooth on all four sides (S4S). It measures about 5-5/8 in. square, shrinking toward 5-1/2 in. as it dries and comes in a 12 ft length.
Utility grade is an economy grade, not structural framing grade. It is graded on usefulness and low cost rather than strength or appearance. Published design values for Utility grade apply only to 2 in. x 4 in. lumber, so use it for blocking, bracing, forming and general work, and choose a #2 and better board for structural members. This stock is sold green, so it shrinks as it dries and can twist or check.
Features and Common Uses
- Utility grade, an economy grade that keeps the cost of general-purpose lumber down
- Douglas fir is among the strongest and stiffest of the common softwood framing species.
- Green, with a moisture content above 19%, so it is soft to cut and nail
- Surfaced smooth on all four sides (S4S) for square edges and consistent faces
- Not pressure treated, so it is for dry, above-ground use
Commonly used for:
- Blocking, cribbing and bracing
- Concrete forming, shoring and temporary supports
- Crating, pallets and equipment frames
- Landscape and shop projects above ground

Grade, species and moisture marks are stamped on each board and are the governing record for the piece you receive. Span, load and local code decide where the lumber can be used, so confirm with your building inspector or engineer for structural work. Green lumber changes size as it dries.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use utility grade for posts or framing?
Not for structural or load-bearing members unless your building inspector or engineer accepts it. Utility is graded below No. 2 and Standard. Use a #2 and better board for posts, studs and beams, and keep Utility for stakes, bracing and forming.
What is Douglas fir?
Douglas fir is a western softwood prized for its strength and stiffness. It is one of the most common species for heavy framing, beams and posts.
What does green lumber mean?
Green means the board has not been kiln dried and holds moisture above 19%. It is easy to cut and nail, but it shrinks as it dries and can twist, cup or check.
What is the actual size of a green 6x6?
Green stock is surfaced a little larger than dry stock, at about 5-5/8 in. square, shrinking toward 5-1/2 in. as it dries. Contact us if a specific dimension matters for your project.
Can I use it outside?
Only where it stays dry and above ground, or for short-term use. It is not pressure treated, so it will rot in ground contact or constant wet. Choose pressure treated lumber for buried posts and outdoor structures.
