Mapei Primer L - Acrylic Latex Primer for Concrete
Primer L is Mapei's concentrated, solvent-free acrylic latex primer, applied to prepared concrete before a self-leveling underlayment goes down. It improves the bond between a properly profiled concrete slab and the underlayment, and it can also prime poured gypsum underlayments and patches. It is tinted green so you can see where you have covered.
Primer L is a concentrate: mix 1 part primer with 3 parts clean water, so one 3.79 L (1 US gal) jug makes about 4 US gallons of working primer.
Features and Common Uses
- Concentrated, solvent-free acrylic primer that improves bonding between profiled concrete and self-leveling underlayment
- Easy to apply and quick drying

Commonly used for:
- Priming prepared, fully cured concrete before Mapei self-leveling underlayment
- Priming poured gypsum underlayments and patches
- Priming cement mortar beds and cement screeds
- Priming between layers of Mapei self-leveling underlayment

How to Install
- Use sound, fully cured concrete at least 28 days old. Remove dirt, paint, oil, grease, sealers, curing compounds, laitance and adhesive residue, and profile the surface as the underlayment requires.
- Dilute 1 part Primer L with 3 parts clean potable water and mix with a low-speed mixer and paddle. High speeds cause foaming. Do not use it at full strength or at any other ratio.
- Pour the mixed primer onto the floor and work it in with a push broom or brush. Do not roll it on and do not let it puddle. Very porous concrete may need a second coat.
- Allow about 3 hours at 73 F (23 C), until a green, transparent film forms with no milky spots. Cooler floors or high humidity take longer.
- Pour the underlayment or patch within 18 hours. If the primer has been uncovered longer than that, apply a second coat first. Clean tools with water right away.
Apply only between 50 F and 90 F (10 C and 32 C), keep the surface at least 5 F above the dew point, and do not use on on-grade slabs subject to freeze/thaw or over asbestos-containing substrates. Full instructions and limitations: Source: Mapei Primer L product page and data sheets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I dilute Primer L?
Yes. Mix 1 part Primer L with 3 parts clean water. Mapei says not to use it at full strength or at any other ratio.
How much floor does one jug or pail cover?
Diluted 3:1, a 3.79 L (1 US gal) jug covers about 600 to 800 sq. ft. and an 18.9 L (5 US gal) pail covers about 3,000 to 4,000 sq. ft. Porous concrete will use more.
How long before I can pour the underlayment?
Wait about 3 hours at 73 F (23 C), until the primer dries to a clear green film. Pour within 18 hours, or prime again.
Can I roll it on?
No. Work it in with a push broom or brush and avoid puddles.
