Starborn CAP-TOR xd Color-Matched Deck Screws, Epoxy Coated, #10 x 2-3/4 in., 100-Count Accessory Pack

CAP-TOR xd is Starborn's color-matched screw for composite and PVC decking. The head is undercut so it cuts through the capstock layer rather than pushing it up, and a reverse thread under the head pulls the surface material down instead of letting it mushroom around the screw. On a capped board those two details are the difference between a deck that looks finished and one covered in small raised rings.

It drives with a T-20 star bit in a cordless drill or impact driver. The recess is cut deep to stop the bit camming out, the shank is tri-lobular to reduce driving torque, and a Type 17 auger tip starts the screw without a pilot hole in most boards. Pre-drill within 1 in. of a board end, and when working with PVC, dense composites or in cold weather.

Features and Common Uses
  • Undercut head cuts through the capstock layer instead of pushing it up ahead of the screw
  • Reverse thread beneath the head pulls surface material down, which is what stops mushrooming
  • Extra-deep T-20 star recess resists cam-out, so the bit stays put on a long run of decking
  • Tri-lobular shank and acute thread angle reduce driving torque
  • Type 17 auger tip starts without a pilot hole in most composite boards
  • Approved for use in ACQ and other pressure-treated lumber
  • Epoxy color matched to boards from most major decking brands

Commonly used for:

  • Face-fastening capped composite and PVC deck boards
  • Starter boards, end boards and stair treads on decks otherwise built with hidden fasteners
  • Picture-frame borders and breaker boards
  • Composite and PVC cladding and trim over wood framing
Colors and Part Numbers

Every color below is the same screw in the same size. Only the epoxy color changes. Starborn color numbers are stable across their whole fastener range, so a number that matched your boards on a previous order will match again.

How to Install
  1. Snap a chalk line over each joist so the screws land in the centre of the framing and stay in a straight row down the deck.
  2. Use two screws per joist per board, at least 1 in. from the board edge and 1 in. from the board end. Pre-drill any screw within 1 in. of an end, and pre-drill generally with PVC, dense composites or in cold weather.
  3. Drive at moderate speed until the head sits flush with the surface. Do not overdrive. A SMART-BIT depth setter holds the depth consistent over a whole deck and is worth having on anything larger than a landing.
  4. Check the first several screws before carrying on. Surface lifting around the head means slow down or pre-drill. Heads sinking below the surface means back off the clutch.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many screws do I need?

One 100-count pack covers about 30 sq. ft. at two screws per joist with joists 16 in. on centre. For a full deck the 350-count Deck Pack covers around 100 sq. ft. and the 1,750-count Pro Pack around 500 sq. ft., so this pack is usually the one you want for starter and end boards, stairs and repairs rather than a whole floor. Ask us if you would like a larger pack in one of these colors.

Do I need to pre-drill?

Usually not. The Type 17 auger tip starts on its own in most composite boards. Pre-drill within 1 in. of a board end, where splitting is most likely, and pre-drill more generally with PVC, dense composites or when it is cold.

Can I use these with hidden fasteners?

Yes, and that is what the 100-count pack is for. Hidden fastener systems still need face screws at starter boards, end boards, stair treads and picture-frame borders, and a color-matched screw is what keeps those spots from standing out.

Can I use these near the ocean?

Not the epoxy version. For saltwater, coastal or otherwise corrosive exposure, use CAP-TOR xd in 305 or 316 stainless. Starborn recommends 316 specifically for saltwater. The epoxy coating is for normal exterior service over wood framing.

Will the color wear off?

The head coating wears with foot traffic and weather, the same as any color-matched deck screw. It holds up well in a picture-frame border or on a riser, and wears faster in a high-traffic walking lane. That is a normal characteristic of the product rather than a defect.

Can I use these on steel or aluminum framing?

No. This screw is for wood framing. Starborn makes a separate CAP-TOR xd for 16 to 20 gauge steel and aluminum framing, with a Grade 410 stainless body and a drill point. Ask us and we will get you the right one.

What if my board color is not in the list?

CAP-TOR xd comes in more colors than the 13 shown here, including Tan-Gray #31, Ashwood #43, Burgundy #87 and Forest Green #94. Check Starborn's Deck Matcher for your board, then contact us and we will order the color you need.
