2" x 8" #3 SPF KDHT S4S Dimensional Lumber
This is a 2x8 in #3 SPF (spruce-pine-fir), kiln dried and heat treated (KDHT) and surfaced smooth on all four sides (S4S). It measures 1-1/2 in. x 7-1/4 in. actual and comes in a 14 ft length.
#3 is the lowest of the structural light framing grades, below #2. It allows larger and more frequent knots and defects, so it suits blocking, bracing, forming and general jobs where a #2 and better board is not needed. For load-bearing framing, choose a #2 and better board and confirm what your building inspector requires.
Features and Common Uses
- #3 grade, an economy framing grade that keeps the cost of general-purpose lumber down
- SPF is a species group of spruce, pine and fir, light in weight and easy to cut and nail.
- Kiln dried to 19% moisture content or less, so it arrives drier and more stable than green lumber
- Heat treated (KD-HT) to a core temperature of at least 56 C for a minimum of 30 minutes
- Surfaced smooth on all four sides (S4S) for a consistent 1-1/2 in. x 7-1/4 in. actual size
- Not pressure treated, so it is for dry, above-ground use
Commonly used for:
- Blocking, bridging and bracing
- Temporary framing and form backing
- Crating, pallets and shipping frames
- Shop projects and fillers where grade does not matter

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use #3 grade for framing?
Not for load-bearing framing unless your building inspector or engineer accepts it. #3 is graded below No. 2 and allows larger and more frequent defects. Use a #2 and better board for studs, joists, rafters and headers, and keep #3 for blocking, bracing, forming and general work.
What is SPF?
SPF is a commercial species group of spruce, pine and fir. The wood is light and easy to work, and it is graded and sold together as one group.
What does KDHT mean?
KDHT means kiln dried and heat treated. The board is dried to 19% moisture content or less and heated to a core temperature of at least 56 C for a minimum of 30 minutes. It is a heat process, not a chemical preservative treatment.
What is the actual size of a 2x8?
A 2x8 measures 1-1/2 in. x 7-1/4 in. once surfaced. The 2 in. x 8 in. name is the nominal size from before the board was dried and planed.
Can I use it outside?
Only where it stays dry and above ground, or for short-term use. It is not pressure treated, so it will rot in ground contact or constant wet. Choose pressure treated lumber for buried posts and outdoor structures.
