King Chain 1/8 in. Aluminum Wire Rope Sleeves

Turns the end of a wire rope into an eye: thread the cable through, pass the tail back through the other way, and crimp the sleeve down so the two legs are locked together.

Aluminum is used because it is soft enough to deform properly under a swaging tool and still holds up outdoors. KingChain state that a correctly crimped sleeve develops the same breaking strength as the cable it is on, which is the whole point of using one instead of a knot.

  • Model 451900
  • For 1/8 in. cable only, and cable is sold separately
  • Six sleeves per pack
  • Crimped with a swaging tool, not a hammer
  • A correctly applied sleeve develops the same breaking strength as the cable
  • On plastic-coated cable, strip the coating off the crimp area first so the sleeve grips steel
  • KingChain say not to use these for hanging or lifting loads, for supporting the weight of people or objects, or on sports and playground equipment
Questions

Can I crimp one with a hammer?
No. A swaging tool squeezes the sleeve evenly around both legs of the cable. A hammer flattens one face and leaves the grip uneven, and an uneven crimp is the one that pulls out.

Which size sleeve for which cable?
The same size as the cable. A 1/8 in. sleeve goes on 1/8 in. cable. Sizing up to get it on easily is how a sleeve ends up loose.

What about coated cable?
Strip the coating off the section where the sleeve sits. The sleeve has to close onto steel; crimped over vinyl it grips a plastic sheath that will creep.

How many sleeves per eye?
One does the joint. A second, set an inch or so back on the tail, is common practice where the eye takes real load and stops the tail waving about.

Why does KingChain say not to use these overhead?
A crimped sleeve is a field-made termination with no test certificate behind it. Their instruction is not to hang or lift loads with them, not to support the weight of people or objects, and not to use them on sports or playground equipment.
