King Chain Grade 30 Proof Coil Chain
Grade 30 proof coil is the general-purpose welded steel chain. It covers the ordinary jobs that do not need high-strength alloy: tie-downs, light towing, guard chains, farm and yard work.
Grade 30 is not a lifting chain. Only Grade 80 and Grade 100 alloy may be used overhead.

Questions
Which size do I need?
Work from the load, not from the look of the chain. 3/16 in. carries 800 lb., 1/4 in. 1,300 lb., 5/16 in. 1,900 lb. and 3/8 in. 2,650 lb. Then leave margin for anything dynamic.
Can I use it to lift?
No. Grade 30 must not be used for overhead lifting. NACM restricts that to Grade 80 and Grade 100 alloy chain.
What does the 4 to 1 design factor mean?
The published working load limit is a quarter of the minimum breaking force. That margin covers wear, shock and the fact that real loads are rarely in pure straight tension. It is not spare capacity to use.
What is the difference between Grade 30 and Grade 43?
Grade 43 high test is stronger for the same size. A 1/4 in. Grade 43 carries 2,600 lb. against 1,300 lb. for Grade 30. Neither may be used overhead.
Is it marked?
5/16 in. and larger Grade 30 is embossed with 3, 30 or 300 at intervals. Marking on 1/4 in. and smaller is optional for the manufacturer.
When should I retire a chain?
When any link has worn below its minimum allowable thickness, or shows nicks, gouges, cracks or stretch. A stretched chain has already been overloaded.
