KingCord 3/16 in. x 100 ft. Cotton and Polyester Diamond Braid Clothesline

Clotheslines have a short list of requirements, all about behaviour rather than strength: stretch as little as possible so the line does not sag under a load of wet washing, hold a round section so it runs over a pulley instead of binding in it, and survive being left in the sun.

This is a polyester and cotton blend in a 3/16 in. diamond braid, 100 ft. The polyester does the work, low stretch and abrasion resistance and UV resistance, and the cotton is there for the feel of it in the hand. Safe working load is 16 lb, which makes it a line for washing rather than for utility work.

Questions

How much weight will it take?
KingCord publishes a 16 lb. safe working load, which is a full line of wet washing and not much more. It is a clothesline, not a utility rope.

Why cotton and polyester rather than one or the other?
Polyester does the work: low stretch so the line does not sag under wet clothes, good abrasion resistance, and it holds up to sunlight. The cotton is there for the hand feel, because this is a rope people touch every day.

Will it run over a pulley?
Yes. The diamond braid holds a round section rather than flattening, which is what lets it run smoothly rather than binding in the sheave.

Will it sag?
Far less than a natural-fibre line. Low stretch is the property a clothesline is chosen for and it is why polyester is in the blend.

Can I leave it up all year?
It is UV and weather resistant, so yes. Slack it off in winter rather than leaving it under tension.
