Makita 9924DB 3 in. x 24 in. Belt Sander
The flush-sanding one. An extended base lets the 9924DB work right into a corner using the nose and the side of the machine, which is the thing you cannot do with a sander whose housing overhangs the belt.
It runs at a fixed 1,300 ft./min. on 7.8 amps and takes the same 3 in. x 24 in. belt as the 9920. If you want a speed dial instead of a flush base, that is the 9920.
- 3 in. x 24 in. belt at a fixed 1,300 ft./min.
- Extended base sands flush using the nose and the side
- Belt tensioning lever for quick belt changes
- 7.8 amps, 10.6 lb.
- Dust bag included
- Model 9924DB

Which Makita belt sander
| Model | Belt | Amps | Belt speed | Net weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9032 | 3/8 in. x 21 in. | 4.4 | 980 - 5,600 ft./min. variable | 3.5 lb. |
| 9924DB | 3 in. x 24 in. | 7.8 | 1,300 ft./min. | 10.6 lb. |
| 9920 | 3 in. x 24 in. | 8.8 | 690 - 1,440 ft./min. variable | 9.9 lb. |

The 9920 and the 9924DB take the same 3 in. x 24 in. belt and are not the same tool. The 9920 has a variable speed dial and an auto-tracking belt system, so it holds a slow speed on veneer and centres the belt without a knob. The 9924DB runs at a fixed 1,300 ft./min. and instead has an extended base that lets it sand flush into a corner using the nose and the side. Pick on which of those two things you do more often, not on the price.
The 9403 is the stock removal tool: 11 amps and a 4 in. belt, for flattening and for taking material off in a hurry. The 9032 is at the other end entirely, a detail sander with a narrow arm for getting into places a full-size machine cannot reach.

Questions
How is this different from the 9920?
Same belt size, different tool. This one has an extended base for sanding flush into a corner and runs at a fixed speed. The 9920 has a variable speed dial and an auto-tracking belt system instead.
Why is it cheaper than the 9920?
It has no speed dial and no auto-tracking belt system. That is the whole of the difference in the price, and neither matters if what you need is to sand into a corner.
What are the cork rubber and carbon plates for?
They sit behind the belt as backing plates. The cork rubber gives a softer contact for finishing, the carbon plate a harder one for flat stock removal. Both are in the box.
Can I use it on its side?
That is what the design is for. The nose and the side both sand flush, which is how you get up to a wall or into an inside corner.
