Onward 12 in. Cane Bolt

A cane bolt is the long drop bolt used on the inactive leaf of a double gate. It shoots down into a socket in the ground and holds that leaf still, so the active leaf has something solid to latch against.

Without one, a double gate has nothing to close onto and both leaves swing. It is the part people leave off and then wonder why the gate never latches properly.

  • 12 in. drop bolt
  • Goes on the inactive leaf of a double gate
  • The bend at the top is the handle, which is where the cane name comes from
  • Driveway and yard gates, barn and field gates, any gate that needs pinning to the ground
  • Black finish
  • Model 01R305FB
How to install
  • Mount the bolt on the inside face of the inactive leaf, running vertically with the handle within reach.
  • Set a ground socket or drive a pipe into the ground where the bolt lands. Dropping the bolt into bare dirt works for a week and then does not.
  • Fit a second socket at the open position if you want the gate held open in wind.
  • Leave enough clearance that the bolt still drops when the ground heaves in winter.
Questions

What is a cane bolt for?
It pins the inactive leaf of a double gate to the ground so the active leaf has something to latch against.

Do I need a ground socket?
Yes, in practice. A hole in bare ground closes up and fills with grit. Set a socket or a pipe.

Can I hold the gate open with it?
Fit a second socket at the open position and it will.

Which leaf does it go on?
The one you do not use day to day.
