Aluminium or the plastic one?
Aluminium survives a tool bag better. The high-impact ABS version, stock 1794483, reads the same and costs less, and is the sensible choice if it lives in a box on its own.
Does the line have to be tight?
Yes, and this is where line levels go wrong. A line with any sag reads level at the level and is not level along its length. Pull it taut and hang the level in the middle of the span.
