1" x 4" Western Red Cedar Clear V-Joint T&G, KD

This is 1x4 Western Red Cedar tongue-and-groove board in the Clear appearance grade, milled with a V-Joint profile: a V-groove run along both edges of the face so each board reads as a distinct course once installed. It is kiln-dried and sold in random lengths, not one fixed board length.

Clear V-Joint T&G is a generic Western Red Cedar dimension-lumber pattern, milled to standard tongue-and-groove sizing rather than sold under a manufacturer name, so species, grade and profile are what to specify when ordering, not a brand.

Western Red Cedar heartwood conducts heat slowly and holds its shape through repeated heat-and-humidity cycling, which is why this board is a common choice for sauna and steam room interiors, as well as interior paneling, soffits and covered exterior cladding.

Features and Common Uses
  • 1x4 Western Red Cedar tongue-and-groove board, Clear grade, kiln-dried for a stable, worked-to-size profile
  • V-Joint profile: a V-groove on both edges of the face, so each course reads as a distinct board with a crisp shadow line
  • Clear grade is free of the knots you'd see in a Select Tight Knot board, for a smooth, uniform face
  • Low thermal conductivity and strong resistance to warping under heat and humidity, why cedar is a standard sauna and steam room choice
  • Naturally decay- and insect-resistant heartwood, low in resin and pitch
  • Random lengths as milled, sold by the linear foot rather than one fixed board length

Commonly used for:

  • Sauna and steam room interiors: walls, ceilings and benches
  • Interior accent walls, feature ceilings and wainscoting
  • Soffits, porch ceilings and covered exterior cladding
  • Cabin, spa and pool-house paneling

How to Install
  1. Sticker the boards flat in the room where they'll be installed for 1 to 2 weeks before fastening, so the wood reaches the room's moisture content first.
  2. Fasten each board through the tongue at every stud or furring strip with a finish nail, so no nail heads show on the face.
  3. Seat each board's groove over the previous board's tongue, checking for square every few courses.
  4. In a sauna, keep the clearance around the heater that the heater manufacturer specifies, and leave the cedar unfinished rather than sealing it with a film-forming coating.

No single manufacturer governs this install sequence, since the board is a generic species and grade rather than a branded product line. For a sauna build, follow the heater manufacturer's clearance and ventilation instructions first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this board suitable for a sauna?

Yes. Low thermal conductivity and resistance to warping under heat and humidity are why cedar is a standard choice for sauna and steam room interiors.

What length does it come in?

Random lengths as milled, sold by the linear foot. Contact us if a job needs a guaranteed minimum length for continuous runs.

What's the difference between this and your V2E cedar tongue-and-groove soffit board?

V-Joint grooves both edges of the face for a shadow line at every course. Our V2E soffit board grooves one edge only, for a flatter joint line.

Does it need a finish for sauna use?

No. Interior sauna cedar is normally left unfinished, since a film-forming stain traps moisture and gets hot to the touch. For exterior siding or soffit use, a semi-transparent or solid stain is fine once it's acclimated.

How much wall does one linear foot cover?

About 3 in. of width per linear foot at this board's milled face, before allowing for trim waste and end cuts.
