2" x 10" Economy KDHT S4S Dimensional Lumber
This is a 2x10 in Economy softwood, kiln dried and heat treated (KDHT) and surfaced smooth on all four sides (S4S). It measures 1-1/2 in. x 9-1/4 in. actual and comes in a 10 ft length.
Economy grade is a cost-first grade, not structural framing grade. It is chosen on price rather than strength or appearance, so expect knots, wane and other defects. It suits blocking, bracing, forming, crating and general jobs. For load-bearing framing, choose a #2 and better board and confirm what your building inspector requires.
Features and Common Uses
- Economy grade, a low-cost grade for jobs where strength and appearance are not critical
- Softwood lumber that is easy to cut, nail and fasten.
- Kiln dried to 19% moisture content or less, so it arrives drier and more stable than green lumber
- Heat treated (KD-HT) to a core temperature of at least 56 C for a minimum of 30 minutes
- Surfaced smooth on all four sides (S4S) for a consistent 1-1/2 in. x 9-1/4 in. actual size
- Not pressure treated, so it is for dry, above-ground use
Commonly used for:
- Blocking, bridging and bracing
- Temporary framing, concrete form backing and job-site bracing
- Crating, pallets and shipping frames
- Shop shelving and workbench frames

Frequently Asked Questions
What does economy grade mean?
Economy grade is a low-cost commercial grade. It allows more knots, wane and other defects than No. 2 or Utility, and it is sold for jobs where price matters more than strength or appearance. It is not a structural framing grade.
What does KDHT mean?
KDHT means kiln dried and heat treated. The board is dried to 19% moisture content or less and heated to a core temperature of at least 56 C for a minimum of 30 minutes. It is a heat process, not a chemical preservative treatment.
What is the actual size of a 2x10?
A 2x10 measures 1-1/2 in. x 9-1/4 in. once surfaced. The 2 in. x 10 in. name is the nominal size from before the board was dried and planed.
Can I use it outside?
Only where it stays dry and above ground, or for short-term use. It is not pressure treated, so it will rot in ground contact or constant wet. Choose pressure treated lumber for buried posts and outdoor structures.
