3" x 4" #2 & Better Heat Treated S4S Fir Dimensional Lumber
This is a 3x4 in No. 2 & Better fir, heat treated (HT) and surfaced smooth on all four sides (S4S). It is a heavier section than a 2x4, sold in 8, 10 and 12 ft lengths.
The finished size is not published for this stock. Surfaced 3x4 is milled slightly under its nominal size and the exact dimensions depend on the mill and on moisture content. Contact us if a specific thickness or width matters for your layout. For standard 2x4 framing, see our 2 x 4 #2 Grade Fir Dimensional Lumber.
Features and Common Uses
- No. 2 & Better grade fir, a general framing grade with sound knots and good strength for its size
- Heat treated (HT), so the board has been heated through its core to a set temperature and time
- Surfaced on four sides for smooth faces and square edges
- A 3 in. nominal thickness gives more stiffness and screw-holding depth than a 2x4
- Not pressure treated, so it is for dry, above-ground use
Commonly used for:
- Heavy blocking, bracing and headers in light framing
- Sill plates, bench frames and shop or garage framing
- Post and rail work in dry, covered structures
- Pallet, crate and equipment frames

Frequently Asked Questions
What does HT mean on lumber?
HT means heat treated. The wood is heated to a core temperature of at least 56 C for a minimum of 30 minutes under the ISPM 15 standard. It is a heat process, not a chemical preservative.
What does No. 2 and Better mean?
It is a visual grade for framing lumber. No. 2 and Better boards are sound for general structural use and can include higher grades above No. 2, so you get a consistent, reliable board.
What is the actual size of a 3x4?
A surfaced 3x4 is planed smaller than its nominal 3 in. x 4 in. name, and the exact size depends on the mill. Contact us if you need a specific thickness and width confirmed.
Is a 3x4 the same as a 2x4?
No. A 3x4 is thicker, so it is stiffer and heavier and is not interchangeable with a 2x4 in a wall or framing plan. Check your drawings before you substitute one for the other.
Can I use it outside?
Only where it stays dry and above ground. It is not pressure treated, so it is not suited to ground contact or constant wet. Choose pressure treated lumber for those jobs.
