Deckorators Composite Sleeper System, 1-1/2 in. x 1-1/2 in.

The Deckorators Sleeper System is a reversible two-tone composite sleeper used to raise and level deck boards over a solid substrate, most often a concrete slab or a properly membraned rooftop deck. It is milled 1-1/2 in. x 1-1/2 in. (2 x 2 nominal) in the same Surestone mineral-composite material as Deckorators decking, in 8 and 12 ft. lengths.

Not a structural joist. Deckorators' own installation guide states the sleepers are not structural and must sit on a continuous, fully supported surface. They space and level decking; they do not span like a joist, and a rooftop installation needs a licensed contractor to confirm the roof's load capacity and waterproofing first.

Features and Common Uses
  • Reversible two-tone composite sleeper for raising and levelling deck boards over a solid substrate
  • Mineral-based Surestone composite construction, rated for ground and water contact
  • Two colour faces per board, Gray/Brown or Gray/Gray, so you flip whichever side you don't want to show
  • Not structural; must be fully supported by the substrate beneath it, not spanning like a joist

Commonly used for:

  • Rooftop decks and patios over a concrete slab or a properly membraned roof
  • Paver-style deck installations needing a consistent, level base
  • Ground-level installs over a solid, well-drained substrate

How to Install
  1. Have a licensed contractor confirm the roof or slab's load capacity and waterproofing before installing; sleepers are not structural and must sit on a continuous, fully supported surface.
  2. Install an EPDM or equivalent moisture barrier under the sleepers on a rooftop application, per the installation guide.
  3. Lay sleepers to match the joist spacing called for by the deck board you are installing over them.
  4. Fasten with a compatible deck screw driven flush, and leave a minimum 1/4 in. gap wherever a sleeper meets a solid object.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can sleepers replace joists?

No. Deckorators states the sleepers are not structural and must sit on a continuous, fully supported surface such as a concrete slab or a properly membraned rooftop deck. They raise and space deck boards; they do not span like a joist.

What colour do I get?

Gray/Brown or Gray/Gray, both reversible two-tone boards. Flip whichever face you don't want to show.

Do I need a roofing contractor before installing these on a rooftop deck?

Yes. Deckorators' installation guide calls for a licensed contractor to confirm the roof's load capacity and waterproofing before installing a sleeper system over a membrane roof.
