King Chain 7x7 Vinyl Coated Aircraft Cable
Galvanized steel cable in 7x7 construction with a clear vinyl sheath, cut from the reel to the linear foot. Buy the length the job needs rather than a coil.
Both sizes are quoted by the diameter of the steel core. The vinyl sits on top of that, so the 3/32 in. cable measures 1/8 in. over the coating and the 1/8 in. cable measures 3/16 in. That difference is what catches people out when they order fittings. Remove the vinyl coating where a sleeve, clip or thimble goes. The steel has to be in contact with the fitting for the fitting to grip.

Which diameter am I ordering?
The steel core. A 3/32 in. cable measures 1/8 in. across the vinyl and a 1/8 in. cable measures 3/16 in. Order fittings to the core size and strip the coating where they go.
Do I have to strip the coating?
Yes, wherever a fitting goes. KingChain is explicit that the steel has to touch the sleeve, clip or thimble. A crimp made over vinyl grips vinyl, and vinyl creeps under load.
Coated or uncoated?
Coated where the cable rubs on something you care about or gets handled. Uncoated where it has to run over a pulley or take fittings along its length. The uncoated 7x19 cable is also sold here by the foot.
How is it cut?
From the reel with a cable cutter, which shears it cleanly. Ask for the length in feet and it is measured off and cut.
Is 7x7 or 7x19 stronger?
They are close at the same diameter. The real difference is flexibility: 7x19 has more and finer wires and bends more easily, so it is the one for running over a sheave. 7x7 holds its shape better on a static run.
