Joins two chains, or a chain to a fitting, without cutting or welding. Unscrew the sleeve, hook the link on, screw the sleeve back down, and you have a closed link that still comes apart when you want it to.
The size is the diameter of the steel the link is formed from, not the length of the link. That diameter is what sets the load rating, so match it to the chain or rope you are joining rather than to the gap you are trying to close.

Questions
Is the size the length of the link?
No. It is the diameter of the steel the link is formed from, the same way chain and rope are sized. Match the link to the chain, not to the gap you want to close.
Can I leave one in as a permanent connection?
Yes, and that is most of what they do. Screw the sleeve fully closed. Where the joint gets knocked or vibrated, a spot of thread locker keeps the sleeve from backing off.
Can I hang a swing on one?
KingChain lists swings and hammocks among the uses. Size the link to the chain and stay inside the safe working load for that size.
Why is the 5/16 in. so much stronger than the 1/4 in.?
Capacity rises faster than diameter does, so a small step up in size is a large step up in load. The jump here is 640 lb. to 1,550 lb. for one sixteenth of an inch more steel.
What does safe working load mean?
It is the load KingChain says the link may carry in service, with the margin already taken off the breaking strength. It is not a breaking figure and it is not a number to work up to and past.
