Onward 6 in. Galvanized Barrel Bolt

The simplest way to hold a gate or door shut: a sliding bar in a barrel that drops into a keeper on the frame. Nothing to adjust, nothing to seize, and you can see at a glance whether it is shot.

Fit it on the inside face where you can, so the fixings are not reachable from outside.

  • Galvanized, which is the coating to choose outdoors since it is thick enough to survive continuous exposure
  • 6 in.
  • Nothing to adjust and nothing to seize
  • Model 562GAV
  • Not lockable on its own, though many barrel bolts allow a padlock through the shot bolt or the keeper
How to install
  • Mount the barrel on the door and the keeper on the frame, with the bolt shooting square into the keeper.
  • Check the bolt slides freely through its full travel before driving the final screws. A bolt fitted under strain will bind as the timber moves.
  • Leave a little clearance in the keeper. A bolt fitted to a perfect fit will jam the first time the gate swells in the wet.
  • On an outward-opening door, fit it on the inside so the fixings are not accessible from outside.
Questions

Is it lockable?
Not on its own. Many barrel bolts allow a padlock through the shot bolt or the keeper, but on its own it just holds the door closed.

My bolt keeps jamming. Why?
Usually the keeper is aligned too tightly, or the door has dropped. Leave a little clearance and check the hinges.

Which finish should I choose?
Galvanized for continuous outdoor exposure, zinc for indoor and sheltered positions.

Inside or outside?
Inside wherever possible, so the fixings cannot be reached from outside.
