Simpson Strong-Tie HDUE Holdown with Strong-Drive SDS Screws
The HDUE is Simpson Strong-Tie's predeflected holdown for resisting overturning in shearwalls, braced wall panels and other lateral force-resisting assemblies. It replaces the discontinued HDU one for one, at higher load in every size.
Six sizes cover 3,790 to 17,685 lb. allowable tension in DF/SP. The predeflected seat removes seat deflection under load, and on the four larger sizes the screws drive at 45°, so fewer fasteners carry more load. Strong-Drive SDS Heavy-Duty Connector screws are supplied with the holdown.
The anchor bolt is not included. Size it by model: 5/8 in. for HDUE3 through HDUE7, 7/8 in. for HDUE9, 1 in. for HDUE13 and HDUE17. The HDUE13 comes with the heavy-hex anchor nut its tabulated loads require.

Loads are increased for wind or earthquake with no further increase allowed, and assume every specified fastener is used. Finish is G90 galvanized. Figures from Simpson Strong-Tie flier F-C-HDUE25.
How to Install
- Check the post against the load table. The tabulated load depends on post size, and a smaller post than listed carries less.
- Slide the holdown over the anchor bolt with the seat bearing on the sill or bearing plate and the back plate flat against the post.
- Drive every specified SDS screw. No pilot hole is needed. On the HDUE9, HDUE13 and HDUE17, use the angled tabs so the screws enter at 45 degrees.
- Fit the washer and nut and tighten snug. Use the heavy-hex nut supplied with the HDUE13.
Two holdowns on opposite faces of the same member can double the tabulated load if the member meets the minimum thickness shown, otherwise offset them so the screws do not interfere. The designer specifies anchor bolt type, length and embedment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the screws included?
Yes. Strong-Drive SDS Heavy-Duty Connector screws are supplied with the holdown. The anchor bolt is not, and neither is the nut except on the HDUE13, which ships with its heavy-hex nut.
What size anchor bolt do I need?
5/8 in. for the HDUE3, HDUE5 and HDUE7. 7/8 in. for the HDUE9. 1 in. for the HDUE13 and HDUE17. Some tabulated loads exceed the tensile strength of a standard Grade 36 rod, so have the anchor checked by your designer.
Which HDUE replaces my HDU?
HDU2 to HDUE3, HDU4 to HDUE5, HDU5 and HDU8 to HDUE7, HDU8 on a 3-1/2 in. post to HDUE9, HDU11 to HDUE13, HDU14 to HDUE17. Every one of these is equal or higher capacity.
Do I need to predrill for the SDS screws?
No. Strong-Drive SDS screws drive straight into the post without a pilot hole.
Can I use two on the same post?
Yes. Holdowns on opposite faces can double the tabulated load if the member is at least the minimum thickness listed. If it is thinner, offset them vertically so the screws do not meet.
